This 2003 Harvard Gazette article explains the link between these three fascinating aspects of the human psyche. The link appears to be found in a biological function called ‘latent inhibition’ which appears to be the filter between novel (relevant) and familiar (irrelevant) stimuli. Shelley Carson hints that the difference between schizophrenics and eccentric geniuses may be their unequal capacity to manage large amounts of sensory information.
